The photographic work (Sur)Nature is a contemporary experience of the Columbian south. By employing a frontal yet discreet form of observation, the natural order of things is not disturbed. Within this order, nature and man are permanently mixed, sometimes in a fusional way, other times in a confrontational way. The omnipresent steam in the air and screens of vegetation in which masks transform men into birds create a vision that remains slightly veiled. The images express this difficult to detect link, which at times appears to be supernatural and which requires an attentiveness to break past clichés. Colombia does not reveal itself easily, and asks in return for visitors to discard their cultural preconceptions. In this region of the Colombian south, the frosty mist of the 1,800 meter peak mountain range joins the moist, burning air of the Pacific Ocean. The region's native, black and white populations bear the distinct and generous character of the natural elements. My photographs act as benchmarks in this movement by taking hold of this powerful and vulnerable presence that is subject to multiple forces. Sur, as in "south" in the Spanish language, becomes the superlative of what the natural elements offer there.
