Data on migratory flows in the Mediterranean: According to UNHCR (United Nations Refugee Agency) and IOM (International Organization for Migration) sources.
Installation on digital photo frame, 10'' (25.4 cm)
Water is blue because when light encounters water, it undergoes diffraction. The blue of the light spectrum remains on the surface, while the red is absorbed and lost in the depths of the abyss. This project uses a video showing the spray caused by the wake of a boat on the sea. The boat's progress and the flow of shapes modify the video on the screen. On this random, fluctuating map, data on migratory flows in the Mediterranean take shape. This mixture of video and generative art (the plots are created using the computer language that interprets the data) is completed by the appearance of words and numbers that refer to the migratory flows of recent years. The colors of the red outlines always refer to the rising seabed and what it has swallowed up. This visualization of flows is intended to be symbolic, and speaks of an often tragic reality, that of all migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean. Always on the lookout for questions of representation, I'm interested here in informational flows, which I attempt to re-materialize using the physical and symbolic characteristics of water.
